How To Clean Your Dog’s Ears

Cleaning your dog’s ears should be a routine, even between professional grooms.

Every dog is different regarding how often cleaning should be done. It is known that dogs with heavy, floppy ears (poodles, doodles, cockers etc.) tend to require more frequent cleaning.

Why is this, you ask…. it’s because these dogs tend to have more ear health challenges, mainly due to the structure of the ear and the lack of air circulation.

This doesn’t mean that dogs with non-hanging ears (for example, a German Shepherd) don’t require ear TLC; they do, but perhaps not as often.

Before you clean your dog’s ears, it’s essential to understand the following:

  1. Using a QTip is extremely dangerous and can injure the inner ear.

  2. You should not clean the ears if you feel intense warmth of the canal and ear leather area, see discharge, smell a strong odour, see redness, notice your dog is exhibiting pain, or notice intense head shaking or scratching. With any of these symptoms, I suggest you visit your vet to ensure your dog does not have an ear infection.

  3. By cleaning the ears diligently, you can avoid expensive vet bills.

In the video, I demonstrate how to do the simple ear wipe on Farmer, the Aussie and a more intense ear flush on Juno, the Boston Terrier.

For the simple ear wipe, you can use ShowTech Ear Care on a makeup pad or purchase disposable ShowTech Ear Wipes (available at Zoom Zoom Groom).

For the deep ear flush, I use ProOtic Cleansing and Drying Solution, also available at the salon.
